Consorts and offspring of other deities
The majority of the gods and celestial beings in pan-Hinduism are considered to be the decedents of Brahma. The Hindu cultural sphere has also adopted many regional deities. Following are some renowned gods mentioned with their consorts:
1. Varuna: He is the god of the ocean and one of the twelve Aditiyas, sons of Aditi. He married Varunani and has a daughter, Varuni. According to Vayu Purana, he married Sunadevi, the daughter of Samudra. They bore two sons, Kali and Vaidya, and a daughter Surasundari. Bhagavata Purana mentions Carshani as his consort.
2. Samudra: He is another god of the ocean who married Tirangini, the goddess of rivers.
3. Mitra: He is the god who protects treaties, and he is one of the twelve Aditiyas. He married Revati.
4. Tvashtar: He is a craftsman deity often identified with Vishvakarma. He married Virochana who bore him a daughter named Saranyu and a son, Trisiras.
5. Kubera: He is the god of wealth and king of yakshas. His wife is Bhadra, the goddess of auspiciousness.
6. Bhaga: He is a god of fortune. He married Siddhi.
7. Indra: He is the king of heaven and the god of thunder and rain. He married Shachi. She is the daughter of Pulomaa, an asura, and is associated with beauty, jealousy, and rage. She is usually venerated as Indrani, a Matrika goddess.
8. Agni: He is the god of fire and the son of Aditi. He married Svaha, the daughter of Daksha. Swaha is a Sanskrit term that means “well said”, indicating the end of a mantra and offering to fire. Agni also has a daughter named Angneya who is considered as the Shakti of Agneya Astra, a fire weapon.
9. Yayu: He is the god of winds. His wife is Anjala.
10. Kamadeva: He is a God of love and sexual desire. He married Rati, a daughter of Daksha. She is a goddess of passion and sexual pleasure. Kamadeva is also associated with spring and hence goddess of spring, Vasanta, also accompanies him.
11. Surya: He is the sun god and he is one of the many solar deities and a son of Aditi. He married Saranyu and Chhaya. Saranyu, also called Sanjna, is the daughter of Tvashtar, and the mother of three sons named Yama, Ashvins, Revanta, Shraddhadeva Manu (current manu), and one daughter, Yamuna. Chhaya is the shadow image of Saranyu. She bore Surya two sons, Shani and Savarni Manu (the next Manu), and a daughter, Tapti, a river. 12. Yama: He is the God of death, who represents the embodiment of Dharma and is often identified with Dharma (the deity). Different texts mention different names of his wife but the most common name is Dhumorna, while Urmila, Syamala, or Vijaya are mentioned in other texts. Dhumorna is the goddess of “vadh” which means killing someone in a war. Sometimes he is described with three wives, Hemamala, Sushila, and Vijaya.
13. Ashvins: They are two twin gods associated with medicine and preventing misfortune and sickness. Both of them married Suryaa, a daughter of Surya mentioned in the Rigveda.
14. Revata: He is the chief of Yakshas, forest spirits and he married Aranyani, goddess of the forest.
15. Soma: Soma also called Chandra, is the moon god and one of the Navagraha, nine planets in Hinduism. He married twenty-seven daughters of Daksha. They are Ashvini, Bharani, Krttika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Tarakam or Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Janakam or Magha, Phalguni, Uttarphalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Svati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyestha, Mula, Purvashadha, Uttarasadha, Srona or Shravana, Dhanistha or Shatabhisha, Abhijit or Prachetas, Purvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada and Revati. They all are associated with the 27 constellations (Nakshatras). Out of them, Rohini was the beloved consort of Chandra. She is the personification of Aldebaran, one of the brightest stars visible from Earth.
16. Brhaspati: He is the god of the planet Jupiter, the son of Angiras. He has two wives, Shuba and Tara. He also had sexual intercourse with Mamata (his brother’s spouse), and his second wife, Tara, was once abducted by Chandra.
17. Budha: He also called Soumya, is the planet Mercury god. He was the son of Tara (Brhaspati’s wife) and Chandra. He married Ila, the daughter of Shraddhadeva Manu.
18. Shukra: He is the god of the planet Venus. He married Jayanti, sometimes called Urjjasvati.
19. Mangala: He is the god of the planet Mars. He married Jawalini.
20. Shani: He is the god of the planet Saturn. He has two wives, Neela and Manda. Neela is a goddess personified by sapphire gemstones, and Mandala, also called Dhamini, is the goddess of dance. In Surendrapuri Navagraha Temples, he is shown with Jyestha, the goddess of misfortune.
21. Rahu: He is a shadow deity, who causes eclipses. He is associated with north lunar nodes. His consort is Karali.
22. Ketu: He is also associated with the south lunar nodes. He is also referred to as a shadow planet. His consort is Dhoomra.
23. Dyaus: He is the god of the sky. His consort is Prithvi.
24. Agastya: He was a revered Vedic sage who appears in various texts. Lopamudra, also known as Kaushitaki and Varaprada, was his wife. She is considered a female sage as many hymns are credited as her contribution in Vedas.
25. Aiyanar: He is worshipped in South India and Sri Lanka as a guardian deity. His consorts are Poorna and Pushkala. He is also associated with Ayyappan, the son of Shiva and Mohini.
26. Garuda: He is a bird-like or kite deity and the mount of Vishnu. He married Unnati.
29. Nandi: He is the gate guardian of Kailasa and the mount of Shiva. He is depicted as a bull. His consort is Suyasha.
30. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu: He was a 15th-century Indian saint, considered an incarnation of Krishna. He married Vishnupriya, the reincarnation of the Satyabhama.
31. Dattatreya: He is a composite manifestation of the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) but several texts affirm him as an avatar of Vishnu. He married Anagha, who worshipped as Anagha Devi. Her name means “the sinless one”. She is considered to be a combined form of Tridevi and the Shakti of Dattatreya or a form of Lakshmi herself.
